In their attempt to save what they think is a human, Ichigo and his friends learn she is actually an arrancar named Nel. The three hollows are her brothers Pesche Guatiche and Dondochakka, and their pet, Bawabawa. After engaging in some humorous tomfoolery, a huge hollow named Lunuganga attacks the group, his duty to guard Las Noches against intruders. As he is made of sand, attacks prove to be useless. They are saved by the arrival of Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai, the former freezing Lunuganga whole. The two greet Ichigo by punching him, in retaliation for not waiting for them to help. Nel then offers to take the whole group to Las Noches. During the trip, Rukia briefly explains how she and Renji came to be in Hueco Mundo. Before they can reach Las Noches, Lunuganga rises from the sands again.
